Baby Acne Treatment

Baby acne treatment is regularly sought out by parents who want their babies to be beautiful when the show them off. Baby acne is a common condition that affects 20% of infants. A baby shower is the time when you want your friends and family to see and enjoy your darling newborn. Quite often the little red spots will choose such a time suddenly appear!

Baby acne sometimes occurs 3 – 4 weeks after birth but can appear at birth.  It is caused by the mother’s hormones entering the body of the baby during final phases of pregnancy and therefore is not a cause for alarm. While similar to the type of acne that frequently occurs during puberty, the two types are not the same. Be encouraged by the fact that having baby acne is no indication that he or she will be prone to acne during puberty or even later. There is no connection. Still, this does not diminish the importance of finding the appropriate baby acne treatment.

Another common source of spots such as milia or “milk spots may also develop in early infancy. This happens when skin pores become blocked and show up as tiny bumps around the head, such as the face or scalp much like acne but are white instead of red. Milia will resolve itself so it is not necessary to find a treatment.

Another skin problem that is quite common eczema. This is a condition causing a scaly red itchy rash that leaves babies quite uncomfortable. Eczema is frequently caused by allergies to certain foods or some particles floating in the air. Also some babies’ skin is sensitive to the detergent used to wash their clothes.Eczema is often confused with baby acne. Recognizing the difference is important as you’ll want to consult your doctor if your baby is experiencing eczema.

As was pointed out above, red spots or pimples on the baby should be a cause for concern as it is quite normal. However, should the condition persist longer than a few months, or if they seem to be developing infection, seek the advice of your doctor.

Having beautiful babies is something we all want. But It is not advisable to try clearing the zits or pimples by squeezing them or using acne cream.  Your baby’s skin is very sensitive and doing this could scar your baby’s skin for life. Most often the acne does disappear by itself within a few weeks and until it does, the best baby acne treatment you can provide is changing the bed linens frequently and keeping the baby’s face wiped clean of oils, food and anything else that baby’s are prone to smear on themselves.
